Lavenham 1940s Commemorative Weekend

Join us for a weekend of commemorations, transporting us back to Lavenham of the 1940s.  We celebrate our special relationship with the American Airforce squadrons during that time and remember those who lost their lives in the WWII conflicts.

Saturday 18th May


0900          Car Parking at First Meadow.

The meadow will be open at 0900 and close 1600 and will be run by volunteers


1015               ‘Wartime Lavenham’ guided walk

Guided walk of ‘Wartime Lavenham’ £5 per person. Walk starts from The Swan at 1030hrs (please meet there by 1015hrs).  It will last for approxiamately 60 mins and end

approx 1130hrs in the Airmen’s Bar.  Numbers are limited, so please call 01787 247477 quoting “Wartime Walk” to book in advance.


10.00              Wartime Memorabilia Display – by Mike Warner

The Swan McCallum Room. Free entry, although we would ask for a small donation towards ‘Friends of Lavenham Airfield’ if you’re able to support them please.

East Anglia Books will be selling their military aviation books, many of which focus on the 8th USAAF


1000           The Guildhall

During WWII, The Guildhall was a British Restaurant and the Tea Room  over the weekend will be marking the event with ‘a ‘WWII Special’

Traditional afternoon tea’s have become a firm favourite with visitors to Lavenham.

Extensive menu. Dogs & well behaved owners are welcome.


1000               Vintage Vehicles in Market Place

Come and see the vintage vehicle display in the Market Place. WWII vehicles with their proud owners and vintage cars – good photo opportunities.


1000               1940s Competition

Competition starts for judges to find the 1940s style best dressed window / best dressed building and best dressed employee’s.

Sponsored by Lavenham Parish Council – Results announced lunchtime.


1100               Vintage Fair + Arts and Crafts – Lavenham Village Hall

Vintage Fair stalls and displays, selling vintage items and crafts.


1100          1940s Swing Music  Live – The Swan

Peter Durrent will be playing 1940s piano swing music in the lounge, so please pop in


1100          Airmen’s Bar – The Swan

View the collection of cap badges, shoulder titles, photos and US & UK servicemen’s signatures (over 850 of them), many of which date back to the Second World War.


1200          Vintage Afternoon Tea – The Swan

Enjoy Afternoon Tea, whilst being entertained by the pianist playing 1940s music.

£23.50 per person, including a £1 donation to Friends of Lavenham Airfield.

1300          Little Hall – WWII Evacuee Centre

Little Hall was an evacuee centre during WW2.  This exhibition will focus on the evacuees who came to Lavenham from a school in Bethnal Green in East London, during the Second World War. The entry fee will be £5.00 gift aided and £4.50 standard rate. This goes towards the upkeep of this ancient timber building. A donation will be made to the Friends of Lavenham Airfield.

1930          Commemorative Concert – Lavenham Church

Featuring Wattisham Military Wives’ Choir, Bella Donna, Mattson reading, Bell ringers and a special joint performance from Wattisham Military Wives’ Choir with Bella Donna.

BellaDonna are a trio of female professional singers who met while singing with English National Opera. They get together from time to time to perform a variety of music from the post war period in the style of The Andrews Sisters. This evening they will also sing operatic extracts and numbers from the American Songbook. BellaDonna are Lyn Davis, Judith Douglas and Rebecca Stockland. Tonight they are delighted to be accompanied by DB di Blasio on piano. There will be an interval and light refreshments.
