Lavenham WWI Commemorations - Memorial Poppy Trail
28th October 2018 to 11th November 2018
WWI Centenary Commemorations will take place in Lavenham week commencing 28th October.
LAVENHAM MEMORIAL POPPY TRAIL
As a salute to the 76 Lavenham soldiers who gave their lives in WWI, a trail map has been created by local artist Lienne Birch, commissioned by the Community Council.
You are invited to follow the trail around our delightful village and have identified the homes where those who served departed from; there, displayed in a window, or place nearby, you will find details of the soldier who fell. The maps have been distributed to every household in the village and are available from outlets around the village, including Heeks Grocers and the bakers in the Market Place, Lavenham Butchers and many of the businesses along the High Street.
The Poppy Trail is punctuated at various locations marked on the map by a display of rare WWI photographs. They form part of a cache of over 400 WWI photographs, representing 37 countries and 25 Press Agencies. The collection has been entrusted into the care of The Soper Collection.

COME AND MEET TOMMY
“Tommy” is now on guard in The Market Place, Lavenham. Behind him is the Royal British Legion display of one wooden cross poppy for each Lavenham soldier lost 1914-1919.
The evocative depiction of a World War One “Tommy” has been funded by popular subscription from the people of Lavenham.
Sunday the 11th November 2018, beginning at 9.00 in the morning, will see the traditional Remembrance Day Parade in the Market Place and the Service of Remembrance in the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at 10.15. At 3.00 in Preston St Mary Church, there will be a programme of readings and music remembering and celebrating the coming of peace.
Because this year sees the centenary of the signing of the Armistice that led to the end of WW1 there will be a further event in The Market Place at 6.15pm. This will include choirs, poetry reading, a Roll Call of The Fallen of WW1, Last Post and more, followed by free light refreshments served from Little Hall courtesy of Lavenham Parish Council.
The many volunteers, from a variety of organisations in Lavenham, who have contributed to arranging these acts of remembrance, hope you will take part in these events to honour The Fallen.
